That's probably due to the abysmal tech skills of many who are 
subscribed to the ml.
In the Gentoo mailing list, I've never seen something like that (well, 
not so frequently). :)

Which is to be expected, given that Ubuntu caters to the masses 
(fortunately!) but it has mildy annoying drawbacks.

(I feel it is much worse the stubborn inability of many newbies to 
Google the most obvious things before coming here...)
