Keyboard Indicator panel applet

This might work ...

System > Preferences > Keyboard > Layouts tab.

You have US at top, then United Kingdom, right?

Highlight United Kingdom and Move Up to top.

Highlight US and Delete.

Keyboard Indicator will disappear.  I cannot guarantee that it will
return, though.
