I used to visit this BBS inspired by the Far Side comics using an
Apple IIe and an 800 baud modem.  There was another one, I forget the
name, that had a MUD in it based on the movie Alien.  This was back
near the end of H.S. in 88/89.  In 95 a guy worked for on the HP
support help desk was an active member of something called FurryMUD.

your own private environment, and script items.

There are people who still use text-based BBSes.  They're all
accessible via the Internet now.  I don't know of any that still use
dial up anymore.  Several MUDs are still active too.  I remember this
one called Realms of Despair.  Last I looked it was still going strong
with lots of active members.
