I suppose the real problem is your video hardware. If you removed the 
xorg.conf, the nvidia driver is no longer used, no matter if it is 
installed or not. But the SiS chips have only very limited support and 
it depends on the particular chip if it works satisfactorily or not, but 
I don't remember which ones work. And furthermore it depends on the xorg 
version because for some older versions there is better support, 
depending on the actual hardware. But all that is a lot of speculation 
because I'm not really familiar with the SiS chips, except I tried to 
make some friend's laptops with SiS chips work. You can from time to 
time have a look at [1] and see if there is a driver for your hardware 
and Ubuntu version available. However I would suggest you buy a new 
Nvidia or ATI card for your machine. They are much better supported by 
any Linux distribution.
