Ubuntu 10.04 LTS failed to restart after upgrade

Probably your data are safe. To check this, reboot with a livecd
(Ubuntu or else), and see if you can find your partition and your
data. If yes, *backup your data ;)* so you don't worry later.

I unfortunately don't know what the problem can be. Could you tell us
what is your hardware in as much detail as possible? Have you tried
booting in recovery mode?
