Good start,
the line:
root (hd?,!)
is indeed needed, or Grub will not know where to look up. Of course,
given the proper location (above) it expects to find exactly the
/directory/file you stated at the next line, like:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.??-??-generic
