Lucid OEM install slow - possible to speed up the process?

OK, it seems one problem with this approach is that the live CD install 
is MUCH faster, it finished in 15 minutes or so. Does anyone know why 
this is so? I'd have expected it to be more or less the same, or even 
the other way around.
