I have not attempted to read the majority of this long series of threads.
I do wonder however if anyone has considered the discussion that occured on the linux-server list recently?

Apparently the current mdadm superblocks go at the end of the partition, and if the end of the partition is the end of the disk, then installer gets confused whether the disk or the partition is the array and much fun ensues. The 'fix' was to make the partitioner always leave a small gap at the end.
