Booting compiled kernel fails as if disk controller was absent

Followed the instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/GitKernelBuild
.
I copied the /boot/config-2.6.32-* file to ~/linux-2.6/.config .
No errors during compilation. To build the kernel I used:

make menuconfig, exited and saved the config, and then:

fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-custom kernel_image
kernel_headers

But can't boot the new kernel, as it can't find the harddrive.

Any ideas?
