NX + Metacity + Window decoration

I have one desktop user (this one) that I have problems with when I
login using NX (NoMachine). Any machine that connects remotely is
lacking window decoration. I found a workaround:

<http://www.ubun2.com/question/493/ubuntu_window_border_missing_no_maximize_minimize_buttons_how_fix>

and actually found that if I just issue:

$ metacity

from a terminal in the remote NX client, that window decoration works in
the remote client. However, I need to keep that terminal process running
for the entire session, otherwise the session reverts back to partial
window decoration.

I should add that it is a user profile issue on this machine/profile, as
I can NX into this machine in other user profiles and window decoration
is working just fine. I've purged NX on all machines, updated,
reinstalled & it's _only_ this one user desktop that has the issue. I've
also tried comparing 'metacity' & 'compiz' config/settings in
gconf-editor but can't seem to find anything obvious.

Target machine is karmic (fully updated). Again, other user profiles on
the same target machine do not have the same proble, so the problem is
in the user/client profile. Client machines connecting to the target
vary (and all have the same the same WD problem) hardy (8.04), karmic
(9.10), lucid (10.04), and Win7.
  Note: the Win7 NX client does not have this issue - all window
decorations are working when connecting to the target, so maybe a compiz
issue from the linux clients?

Any clues on how to troubleshoot this?
