Sorry for the delay in getting back to this. Had to run out of town, a
giant storm is approaching (had to tie down the outhouse) and the DSL is
acting flaky.
Yes, I do have the Dell backup software. I have never used it and it is
rather darn insistent that it get used. The laptop came with a system disk
so I really have no need for it anyway.
The last time it happened.
Turn on laptop.
Select Vista from Grub2.
Do my iThingie.
Dell backup service launches. Ignore and hit cancel on the backup
application before restarting the computer.
Strange error message appears.
Do you know if it is possible to start up the Vista side, say in safe mode,
and completely eradicate the Dell backup service? I know very little about
how Vista works compared to XP.
Some time later.............Flaky dsl finally kicks in again.
So I checked on this Dell Datasafe. It appears to install more like Norton
or one of those windows programs from hell. The best suggestion is do the
safe mode startup and then do the delete.
I am going to try that and then do the NoOp suggestion. It would seem there
would be more on the internet about this but those cryptic icons it throws
up are impossible to type into a google search field.
I will post what happens. I am going to get a copy of the Release Candidate
burned first so that will not be as many updates in case of an accident.
But since I started this response Sam has said he gets the same type error
message with an HP so it might be a Grub2 problem.
Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions, assistance and observations. I
would really enjoy just nuking vista but it goes back to that "Just one
program I need" problem. Jeepers, I wish iTunes worked under Wine. No,
actually I wish Jobs would release a Linux version but I have no hope of
that happening.
