Query re: Running live CD

Hi,
Have just tried to run Live 8.04 and Live 7.04 same results
for both on Toshiba laptop.
It starts and loads kernel the stops at

udevd-event [1656]: run_program: '/sbin/modbrobe' abnormal exit Busybox
v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.35 ubuntu12)
(initramfs)-

tried live Gparted Live cd .
this runs until "waking up USB Devices then

"No GParted Live CD found!!  kernel panic - not syncing : Attempted to kill
init.

Have tried with built in CDRom and with a USB connected drive, same result.

Laptop has Win 7 installed, want to install Ubuntu to dual boot. (Not my
machine)

Any suggestions much appreciated .
