You might want to try out kdenlive first:
the version from the ppa is better than the one from the repositories.

You need a recent version of ubuntu >=9.04 to use the latest kdenlive 
release.

That is why I upgraded my ubuntu 8.04 box.

another videoeditor is iLives but I haven't used it yet.

you have to remove the frei0r-plugin package after installing kdenlive
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/frei0r/+bug/459940

after adding the ppa you can install kdenlive and remove frei0r-plugins 
by issuing this command:
sudo apt-get install kdenlive && sudo apt-get remove frei0r-plugins

be advised that using a ppa poses a security risk.
