A BIOS upgrade is not a bad idea, but I am a little concerned that you
might have hard disk problems.

I strongly suggest backing up all your data, as soon as possible, to
some external media. USB Flash drives (also known as thumbdrives or
pendrives or USK keys) are cheap & convenient for this.

Once you've done this, it might be a good idea to do a filesystem
check ("fsck" for short) on the drive. There are some instructions
