the high resolution in console terminals is achieved by kernel mode
setting (KMS). 
to support kernel mode setting the kernel driver for your graphics card
has to be integrated with certain functions in the kernel. 
neither the proprietary nvidia driver nor the closed fglrx driver have
been integrated by Nvidia/AMD with this functionality. 
since they are closed nobody in the linux community can do anything
about it, you need to contact nvidia to ask for this feature (or use the
free nouveau driver that has such integration but not the level of 3D
support the closed driver has).
