GNOME: how to preserve Konsole tabs?

Yeah, but you have to go to the command line to configure it.

Setup gnome-terminal how you want it. Multiple tabs, profiles, 
backgrounds, etc. Now within one of the tabs, type:

$ gnome-terminal --save-config=gnoterm.conf #it saves a config file to 
current working dir. Put in a path if you want it saved somewhere else. 

Now create a Application launcher that has the exec line like

gnome-terminal --load-config=/path/to/conffile/gnoterm.conf

You can have multiple conf files, so you can create muliple launchers to 
start gnome-terminal how you want. BTW, the drawer panel applet is good 
place to store multiple launchers if you don't want to clutter up your 
main panel or desktop.
