Well it is for sure a hardware problem on my laptop. I d/l Beta
2 on the laptop and on this computer. Both .iso files have exactly
729425920 bytes so I think both .iso files are the same. On the laptop I
made 3 coasters that checked having an error.

So I went to this computer and made a cd at 48x and it is fine! I
am installing it on the laptop as I write this. It is about done and got
more updates via the internet. Now I can report that Lucid is working in
my laptop! I know have a grub2 and admit it is very superior to grub 1.
