The above sentence following "BC" and within the brown/red quote line
has me confused as to where it comes from. I take it that it is written
by you in response to my post and is part of the rest of what you wrote
(following).

Just to clarify things: I have several pairs of HDs all in movable
cradles and I use a pair for various versions of the distros. On one set
I have openSUSE 11.2 (KDE); on another I have Kubuntu Karmic (9.10) and
on another I have Ubuntu Lucid Beta 1. I have not upgraded Karmic to
Lucid - each was a clean, new installation (which is the way I prefer to
work - no leftover bits to stuff things up :-) .)

Earlier today Lucid received a vast amount of updates folowing which I
noticed some changes and after which I rebooted - and this is what I was
referring to when I asked if this meant that I now have Lucid Beta 2 (or
at least a preview of it before its official release in a day or so
(depending in which part of the world you are).

But is the background really purple or is in fact mauve or lilac? I
guess this could be debated depending on how clear your corneas are
(they yellow as you get older) and the type of monitor you have and
whether it can handle RGB colours or not :-) . To me its mauve; to my
wife its lilac :-) .
