Swap is a Solaris innovation, so swap partitions are in Solaris 'format'.

As to your booting latest kernel problem, your grub version is in 
grub-legacy. As a *last resort*, and updating grub may even fail, you 
can always manually modify your /boot/grub/menu.lst to boot the latest 
kernel. But please try this first temporarily at boot menu to make sure 
it works.
