Thanks. I've actually moved my previous xorg.conf out of the way and
used 'nvidia-xconfig' to set a default (that machine is using
nvidia-96). Only issues that I had with video was having to remove
vga=791 (or such) out of menu.lst (that machine is still at grub1) so
that I could see the plymouth splash screen - and I can now get to a
console using Ctrl-Alt-F1-6. So your suggestion did help :-)

The problem in the bug is that, as soon as you click on a username at
the gdm menu list, the password box comes up but the mouse freezes and
you never get the options to select keyboard, language, and desktop at
the bottom of the screen. You can't enter a password & after a few
seconds the gdm screen blanks and then pops back. So you get caught in a
loop. Same thing happens if you logout.
