What is the command-line command to call the Window Selector (applet)?

That's much better description of what you want to accomplish.

I don't think the Window Selector can be made to act on keyboard shortcuts.

But you can try installing "wmctrl" and create a keyboard shortcut for 
executing that. I tried it and it can switch to the desktop containg, 
and focus, windows based on several selection criteria.
