Cannot Get bcm4312 driver to work at all under 9.10 on Dell Inspiron 15n

I have ubuntu 9.10 running on an HP 2133 laptop and had no problem
installing the sta driver.

But on my Dell Inspiron 15n, I cannot get the sta driver to install
using the hardware drivers menu item. I was able to compile the driver
from the bcm website and when I open the hardware drivers menu gui, it
shows the driver installed. But I cannot get either network manager or
wicd to see any wireless networks, let alone connect to them.

Any thoughts?
