Distribution Upgrade Help Needed

Steve, et al.:

   While waiting for a response to my message to this list I did a Google
search and found a pair of commands that (after many hours) seems to have
updated the system.

   When I go to Settings->System->Update manager it tells me the system is up
to date. Is there a place I can read which xubuntu version is the current
one on this host?

   Now we know where this is, I'll have my wife do the upgrade to 9.10 next
month.
