suddenly filling of hd and no access to x

BINGO!!  /var/backup was using almost 700gb of my harddrive. rm a
couple files and could get back into KDE, I thought it was only
supposed to back up new things.  and I thought I had  set it to backup
to a removable hd anyway.

guess I have to somehow get rid  of this or tame it somehow.
