The correct thing to do is to wait until 9.10 comes out in a few weeks
and they will have done all this for you. If you don't want to do that
read on.

It can often be done but you take risks like getting a virus from a
3rd party repository. The best bet is to go to the makers of your
chosen software and find out how to install it from them. Often this
is quite easy but sometimes can be a pain.

Very commonly you just download the source file, configure it, compile
it and install it. Often they write scripts for you to do it
automatically.

I recently installed Blender 2.5 (alpha) into 8.04 and it was a pain.
I asked for help here and got it. It is now running just fine. I am
sure you could do the same.

What is it that you want to upgrade?
