You need to run a gui, but you can also run with a standard X11 session.
I believe you mentioned that you wanted to have a GUI program running.
The only way I know is to start it on the remote server and interface it
with a VNC session. If you drop your connection, the session will still
be running and you can reattach to it anytime you want. I was doing that
when I wanted to have a low end machine run a bit torrent client that
will take weeks to complete. I would use the VNC to start it and look at
its progress. Once I did that I could log off my local machine or turn
it off but the remote process would still be running.
