How to start XAMPP

Ashwin,

Instead of pasting the how-to, would you please let us know what error 
you received when starting apache?

Please also include the version of Ubuntu you're using, the output of 
uname -a and, perhaps, an idea of your end-goal.  One assumes you're 
trying to setup a L(inux) A(pache) M(ySQL) P(HP) and perhaps P(erl) or 
P(ython) server, but clarity is always best when seeking help.
