Are you serious? You don't need to install it if you don't wish to do
so. It was never installed automatically for you, was it?
The *only* Ubuntu Network Manager on any of my systems are on a machine
that is dedicated for testing plain Ubuntu. All of my working systems
have wicd installed instead. Yes, like any other package, wicd has it's
bugs:

At least you have a choice (that an the cli)...
