It seems you are not alone in this. You may consider to join:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/landscape-client/+bug/268447 
despite your above statement about duplicate work. :-)
Anyway, some people think it is a bug an you should confirm that in 
above bug report.
