refresh the desktop?

You really should place an icon of your program in a submenu of
Applications/ instead of the desktop. I have only 2 icons on my desktop
which was created by installing a couple applications using wine which I
plan to move later.
I think most people keep a clean no-icon desktop these days and place
launch buttons on the menu or gnome panel.
I'm not absolutely sure, but I suspect having a lot of icons on the
desktop area uses more resources.
