Actually, I have read about such an application but it's been at least a
year or two ago.  search for linux and whatever company or board name is
called.

I think it was on a blog, a user purchased a digital billboard from ebay
or some place and got it to work with linux.

It was very lame though, no program I think he just echo to a port or
something.  Sorry, can't remember the details.
