ok then...how did you install ubuntu? If you have an ubuntu CD, then
follow the directions I recommended for no internet situation (reprinted
below for your convenience):

try putting an ubuntu CD in (after booting), then run the following in
the given order:
    sudo apt-cdrom add
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install libsynaptics0 gsynaptics

Those packages should be on the install CD, as they are essentials for
most laptops.

Either that, or you may need to find someplace with fast free internet
(like an internet cafe, a buddy's house, or the library or something)
and connect to the internet briefly to download those 2 packages.

What version of ubuntu are you running?
