Thanks for your comments,
during my further efforts I got the following lines on my screen (part of booting):
* Reading files needed to boot........................OK
* Setting preliminary keymap..........................OK
* Preparing restricted drivers........................OK
* Setting the system clock..............................
* Starting basic networking...........................OK
* Starting kernel event manager.......................OK
* Loading hardware drivers............................OK
* Setting the system clock..............................
* Loading kernel modules................................
* Loading manual drivers..............................OK
* Setting kernel variables............................OK
* Activating swap.....................................OK
* Checking root file system..............
Is there any useful indication contained in these lines, e.g. no "OK" when setting the system clock?
