Ubuntu netbook upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10

Decided yesterday to upgrade a netbook from UNR 9.04 to 9.10, which went 
successfully apart from a few problems:
1) The login applet was missing from the panel. Tried to add it by using the 
applet manager - which was very difficult to find - but that gave me inverted 
colours. In the end I had to remove the .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd and 
.metacity directories.

2) I had duplicate entries in the Favourites menu.

3) For some reason Gimp and a few other programs were installed and if I tried 
to remove them it wanted to remove ubuntu-netbook-remix.
