But Add/Remove Software did/does let you install and/or uninstall
multiple applications at a time.
Though I don't seem to have got the software centre in my upgrade to
Karmic, unless it's an as-well-as to the Add/Remove applications.

It will be interesting to see how one app manages to be both as simple
as Add/Remove Applications is now and as complex as Synaptic without
just being a launcher with options for either.
