boot loader not installed

The reason I said grub was not installed is after the newly installed 9.10 would not boot. When I have
the install on the RAID. The live cd no longer boots either. When I have the
install on the other non-RAID drive the live cd works but typing any
grub command in a terminal windows yields: "grub not installed." I mounted my root fs to see if this was true. The directory /boot/grub exists but is empty.

Then I downloaded and booted the Super Grub Disk. I followed instructions to check the grub config from the. It said to run commands
grub>find /boot/grub/stage1
the result was "file not found"
I tried:
grub>root (hd0,1)
grub>setup (hd0,1)
failed: file not found (not the exact error but complains of missing files)

I will try your suggestions and the LVM and RAID grubwiki page from Goh Lip's post. Hopefully one will solve this problem. If so I will post the solution.

Thank you for the suggestions.

John

I am not surprised that (hd2) failed. I am not sure that Grub 2 and
FakeRAID play well together.

Boot from the Live CD and run "file -s /dev/sda" (if sda = (hd0) and
Karmic was installed last on (hd0)). You should get, if Grub is
installed in the MBR, "GRand Unified Bootloader" in the output. You
will have to run "file -s /dev/sda*" if you chose a PBR (I have never
tried it with Grub 2 but I assume that it is possible). But I doubt
that it is not installed because Ubuntu (frustratingly) installs Grub
whether you want it or not.

You could do a further check by mounting your (hd0) root partition,
chrooting, and running "dpkg -l grub-pc" and/or "dpkg -l grub-common".

I can send you Live CD Grub 2 installation instructions if Grub 2 is
not installed or is installed on the wrong disk/partition.
