Failed installs

Twice I bought Emachines at a flea market. The screen said the XP had a
virus. No shock there. But when I switched HDs for one with Ubuntu 9.04,
they went dead. It's never happened w/ any but Emachines. I've gotten many
brands, and no names, but this only happens w/ Emachines. Thanx for any
clues. Bob
