You have to explicitly trust the network you are on. People from their
home are at very low risk of having their password compromised. AFAIK,
script kiddies and the like don't very often tap into ISP backbones
sniffing for passwords. (That being said, I knew someone who got into
legal trouble for doing exactly this twice, once while working for a
national ISP.)
However, it's important to be aware of the security considerations so
you don't expose yourself. People innocently logging into unsecured
sites while connected to networks that are likely to have Ethernet or
wireless sniffers are just asking to have accounts compromised.
School/dormitory internet networks are probably the most infamous for this.
