8.10 will not load recovery options from grub

I am using 8.10 on my Dell Mini 10.   When the system boots (dual with 9.10)
I can select the recovery option, which is then gives you a menu so you can
fix broken packages, etc.   When I select  broken packages the computer goes
through a large number of steps then gives me a root promt.  Computer will
not return me to that menu.  How do I fix that problem or get around it?
