All Printers Have Disappearred

This is what happens:

chippy at dell-desktop:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/cups restart
[sudo] password for chippy: 
chippy at dell-desktop:~$ 

So nothing appears to happen. The file /etc/init.d/cups exists -
otherwise I would get an error message.

Should I try re-installing cups?
