For the folks that are recommending vim; I'd recommend gvim for this
user instead.
@KMB: My first choice (as recommended by Aryan) is gedit
(Applications|Accessories|Text Editor) or Kate (KDE) for general use.
For vim I'd recommend that you try GVim (or Evim) first. This provides a
GUI front-end to vim so that you can easily become familiar with vim &
the Help section includes the full manual + tutorial. After you're
comfortable with that, then I'd give vim in a terminal a try.
