bottom panel problems

You want to right-click on the bar, select something that sounds like
'add new item' and add a 'taskbar'.

I'm assuming you're using Gnome, which is the default desktop
environment for Ubuntu, but not something I have close to hand.

I've given vague instructions in the pursuit of a quick response, I'm
sure someone with more concrete instructions will be along shortly.
