Text editor recommendations

Asking people for text editor recommendations on a mailing list? This is
the stuff of flamewars. Legendary ones at that. In linux-land, your text
editor is kind of like your religion, people are very protective of
their choice ;-)

As a newbie, I'd say a simple GUI text editor like Gedit (if you use
Gnome) or Kate (if you use KDE) would suffice for most things. On the
other hand, time spent on learning vim is time well spent. 

emacs, I still can't get my head around it. I'm sure it's good, cause
many people swear by it. Not me. I like my text editor, simple.
