I ended up reinstalling using the
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20091020.2/
(needed to test
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/444901/ anyway).
PITA, but it's still beta, so I needed to test anyway. Once installed,
the only update is for software-center, so it's pretty current.
<http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/20091020.3/> is now available. Of
course you'll need to hunt for your 'K' double-trouble version :-)
