I had a similar compatibility problem and solved it preloading
v4l1compat.so before Skype, in fact it was the only way I could make
Skype video work with Jaunty/Karmic 64.

But it was not exactly the same problem...

Seems Empathy for Karmic should provide video, but it will probably
lack the universal appeal of Skype.
