No wireless in Ubuntu :(

I could connect at one point, maybe because you are using rtl8187 driver instead of the r8187 driver. However, the rtl8187 driver never worked right for me. I compiled the 2.6.31 vanilla kernel just to find out they removed support for the more mature legacy driver, so then I removed it and got 2.6.30.7 compiled and running, last stable kernel released before 31. I was soon online again through wifi with this guide, compiled prepatched driver from here.

That worked well for a long time and even better with the 2.6.30.7 vanilla kernel than the stock ubuntu kernel 2.6.28-14. Now why it's not working, I have no idea. I will get command output when I get home after my night class.

I also have been to #linux-wireless and #wireless-compat on FreeNode. I tried the latest stable wireless-compat driver, but it would not compile. I was then told to compile the latest git daily snapshot of wireless-compat. That compiled with no error. However, I had the same trouble not being able to connect to any AP but see the wlan networks as with the rtl8187 driver. Could this be a problem with NetworkManager? How can I connect using the command line? Do I need wpa_supplicant for a wep key or is it only used for wpa security or can I give the wep key as a command line argument? Does anyone know a good site for this off the top of their heads?

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm sending this from my mobile Linux device.

Interestingly, 9.04 was the first version I COULD connect with using an
rt8187 wireless card.......
