send mail from shell on 8.04 server (how to?)

Sorry, I was wrong, it's not "silent" - it's stuffed in
/var/mail/myuserid - and error says:
...
A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:
  somedude at somedomain.com
    Mailing to remote domains not supported
...

(And am I mistaken, but mail WILL run a daemon?)
