If that is the case, the product isn't of any use and doesn't provide
a benefit. You can install skype yourself and use a USB handset and
use Skype's service, or use an OSS solution like ekiga and find a
provider that specializes in free to low-cost VOIP.
Skype is closed source and not entirely secure, even on Linux.
Seems to me to be a gimmick, but that's nothing new for stuff
advertised as infomercials :).
