Unless it exceeds the time/effort you're interested in investing, all
hope may not be lost.  There is still potential for recovery using
Photorec (part of the Testdisk package), Foremost, or Magic Rescue among
others.

Since you mentioned pictures, Photorec or recoverjpeg would be of
interest.
