AFAIK, they also replace the need of numbering the disk/partition.
you may then move the SATA slot of a disk without problem.

Adding a new kernel does not imply removing the old one.
Just try the new one and if it fails, you may always reboot to
the default.
For a remote server, I used to use LILO and its -R option.

I dont really know what is the equivalent for GRUB
